Today, Rep. Phil Roe, M.D. (R-Tenn.) the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, released the following statement commemorating Memorial Day:

“From the moment the American idea was born, brave men and women have given their lives to safeguard it against all enemies. Today is the day when we pause to remember their noble sacrifice and the legacy of liberty and opportunity they leave behind. While our public ceremonies may look different this year than in years past, the meaning of Memorial Day does not carry any less weight. I was lucky to leave the Army as a young man and go on to lead a full life, but I have never forgotten my brothers and sisters in arms who did not have that same luxury. I grieve for them, today and every day. This Memorial Day, I ask that you do the same by holding America’s fallen heroes and their families in your hearts and taking the time to reflect on the precious sacrifice they made to allow us to live freely in the greatest country the world has ever known.”
