Today, Rep. Mike Bost (R-Ill.), the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, released the following statement in honor of the 20-year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks:

“2,977 innocent Americans lost their lives on this painful day 20 years ago. Since then, thousands of American servicemembers made the ultimate sacrifice fighting the terrorists that shook our nation – and the world – to its core. Like many, I remember September 11, 2001, as if it were yesterday.

“As a veteran and a firefighter, as I do every year on this date, I am thinking of the families and friends of the Americans who lost their lives two decades ago. Many of the men and women running into the burning buildings and field to save lives were also veterans. I am also thinking of the families and friends of our service men and women who died during the Global War on Terror. We will always remember these daughters, sons, husbands, wives, neighbors, colleagues, and fellow Americans whose lives were cut far too short.

“Finally, I am thinking of the millions of veterans who have raised their right hand in service to this country we are blessed to call home. Watching the events unfold in Afghanistan over the past few weeks has been understandably difficult on our veteran community. To my fellow brothers and sisters in arms, we knew this was already going to be a hard day and the events of the last month have made it even harder. Please know this, you are not alone, and your service was worth it. You made our homeland, and the world a safer place. I proudly salute each and every one of you.

“In honor of all our veterans – those who made it back home and those who did not – we will continue to recognize their service and sacrifice. We commit to telling our children and grandchildren the stories of these brave men and women. We will never forget.”
